This needs to be a chapbook like "Girl" was. I know most people love eBooks, but I don't. And I collect chapbooks. And it makes me sad that I can't put White Flag on the shelf with all of your other books. Also, this means that you will have nothing new to buy when you come back to Nashville in November. (But a new story in the meantime, YAY!)

I've lost touch with Ron. We spent many nights with them while we were building our home in Waynesville. Rachel was a doll and Ron was so wonderful too. I know Ron sold the inn but I haven't been able to touch base with him. I wanted to say hi and see if he has come back to Florida. We'd like to see him again sometime.

If you have contact info for Ron, could you please send my information to him so that maybe he would get in touch. Miss them both now. Great, Great people. Thank you, Nancy Koch

First of all. OMG, I love the boots. If anyone wants to get me Fleuvogs for my 30th birthday, I will not tell them no (can we start an internet campaign for that?!)

Second - and most importantly - anyone who has read your books will totally understand that there is nothing whatsoever that you can cosplay that will negate your books. You're an incredible writer, your story and your characters (ha, your story and Story) are amazing, and if I'm even 1/2 as good as you, I have a chance. So there.

Wait. I know. Challenge. Cosplay *as* Story. There.

Janine, what a beautiful, heartfelt tribute to your friend. Thank you for sharing. I have to think maybe someone who is struggling like Laura did might come across this and realize they have their own Janine who is there for them. And you know that might not be enough to "save" them, but it doesn't mean your friendship, your love, means any less.

Of course we so seldom know what's going on in others' lives, whether we know them casually or closely. You just felt this blow and yet came to Dragon*Con and were so friendly and smiling the few times I saw you (mainly at the charity auction).

So hugs to you, and true appreciation for your kindness and friendship to Laura and others!

I have not yet read your books, just found them on Amazon, but it referred me here, where I just read about your friend. When I read about your feelings of guilt, I just had to write to you. You see, I suffer from depression-not the same as your friend, exactly, as I only get the lows and the med side-effects-but I have been at, or very close to, the point of suicide myself. Hell, I am almost there right now, because of some personal crap. The thing is, and the reason I wish you would be a little easier on yourself, is that the closer I get to swallowing the pills, or getting out the blade, or whatever, the less likely I am to talk about it. Of course, I don't talk about it when things are good, either, which means it is easy for me to hide when I am at my lowest-because I DON'T want any help. When I am that low-as I was once, and only someone calling me and catching that something weird was going on (he knew me pretty well, and realized I was saying goodbye) and threatened to go get my husband. The friend was in Submarine School for the U S Navy, and my husband's submarine was on the same base. I had planned the whole thing out: do some shopping, so the hubby wouldn't have to worry about it for a while, then still have at least 8 hours before anyone would find me, so there would be no stomach pumping or anything. Actually, the friend, who I will just name by initials, CF, threatened to go UA-Unauthorized Abscence, which is like AWOL, for any readers who don't know, to come and stop me. CF is gone now; there was a misunderstanding between us, and I lost the friendship, and, last I heard, he was stationed in Bremerton, WA, but I still owe him my life. I am pretty sure that, if not for his phone call that day, I would have died. Things are pretty bad again now; the meds don't seem to be working, and I can't seem to want them to anymore. But my heart-sister is living with us now, and now I have a little girl to raise. I just have to keep reminding myself that even a slightly screwed-up mother is better than none. My point is that, even if you had been in contact with your friend almost every day, you still might not have caught on, because if she was that determined, she would have been hiding it from everyone. I know that all people are different, and she may have been nothing like me. But I am willing to bet that she would NOT want you to blame yourself; She sounds like a person who would want you to remember the best things about her, and try to forgive her for leaving you. Sometimes emotional pain, just like physical pain, can just be too much. I hope this helps a little.

At the end of nearly every class we fill out a survey. One of my teachers won't read hers until the final is graded. She says there can be 150 surveys talking about how awesome she is and how much the student learned/was inspired and 1 "she's a harpy" comment. That 1 bad likely from a student who was going to fails gets to her. I don't think it is ever easy to be critized.

Before I write any review that is negative I ask myself is the book a genre I would normally read and would I have paid for the book in the store based on back page and what not. If my main reason for reading the book was it was free or it was outside my usual genres I consider if I should write a review. I also mention that in my review. I have emailed with a few authors to know they are real people and real people deserve honest curtosity.
I have noticed in the age of the internet and now with so many of us with access on our phones, there become more and more keyboard warriers who will say err type things they would naver say outloud or in person.

Oh yeah and I loved both your books.

Ah, sounds like you've arrived! I wouldn't let it get to you. I am bracing for the onslaught of cutting remarks over my writing but the good news is you're a writer and you have something to be critiqued. That's a huge accomplishment. You have a voice and a story and it's yours. I'm proud of you and I love your writing style. More, I respect your thought process. You're in the game now and all suited up for some hits - so it's good to get them, feel the sting, and learn from it. You're right, you can't please everyone (and you don't want to). I've already started rethinking a lot of stuff I loved reading as a kid and I'm not very gracious to them for their mistakes - yet they are successful. Your job is to take the critiques and become better. And I know you will.

Congratulations! I've always considered getting bad reviews to mean two things as a writer: First, it's a rite of passage, so welcome to the club that we've all been a part of all the way back to Shakespeare and before. Second, it means you stirred somebody's emotions strong enough that they took the time to write the bad review -- true, you'd rather stir their emotions the opposite way, but at least you're hitting them somewhere. Thus, the worst review you could get IMO -- "Meh. It was okay."

In my somewhat longer experience, there are three kinds of reviews: positive, negative, and bad. Negative reviews hurt, of course, but once you calm down, you can see which parts can be relevant to your future work, and which parts don't matter. Positive reviews make you feel good, but after you calm down you discover that maybe they said things they shouldn't have, such as comparing you to other writers who you do not at all resemble (as has happened with me). The the bad reviews, where it soon becomes obvious that the "reviewer" (quotes to signify that that the title "reviewer" may be spurious) is more concerned with showing off how clever he or she is, and is writing for the money (as I know all too well from a really bad review from someone I will not name on the internet -- ask me some time).

The best reviews are those thoughtful ones which credit you for what you did well, and which point out with courtesy where you could have done better. Think of our evaluations in the writer's workshop. Those are immensely valuable.

But you got reviewed, and despite the pain, someone may read it and say that what the reviewer didn't like is really just what the reader is looking for. I've had that experience too, as a reader.

Just reading that made me tired. Heck, MidSouthCon made me tired, and look at everything else you did on top of it!
Then again, you're a Marine, so you can do anything, right?

Also, I was serious about the panel ideas. I want to submit something to GMX, so give me a good idea so they'll let me do it. :D

@Mandi I'm so very glad you liked the book! The Half-Blood is due out in June, and White Flag (another short story) should be out in April or May.

As for the writing, not true! You can do anything you set your mind to.

And yes, your book is in my "to read" pile by my bed, near the top at that! :)

I look forward to you reading my story. Before my mother does, which should give you, uh, fifty years or so, assuming she dies over 100. :/

And your novel was awesome, btw. And Story's dad's story was awesome, btw. (I read that as soon as the novel was done.) But the book was awesomest. So, when's the next one done, cause I'm probably going to be a little twitchy until I get it. And I will never write as well as you do.

I love how small the sci-fi community is. And I'm SO surprised we never met before last year, considering how many of the same people we know. But it's an honor to know you now!

As for the Tardis outfits? If anything, it needs to be even MORE matchy-matchy to increase its awesomeness. :)

PS I hope that Gabi will be at Dragon*Con. I'd love to finally get to meet her!

PPS No. I STILL haven't mailed that package to her.

PPPS Sorry. :)

Loved your recap of a this past weekend. I too was a ShevaCon virgin. I'm so glad that all of the guests and fans were so awesome. It can be nerve racking going to a con alone. But with wonderful people surrounding me, I was able to have a blast. I'm so sorry that the snow drove you away. I should've stayed an extra day! My 5 1/2 hour drive became a straight 8 hour, stress inducing, not the best way to end a weekend event; however, the only damage to my car was to the windshield wipers (which, thankfully, had to be replaced). Photo bomb for the win!

It is inevitable that someone will think you got a phrase or an idea or something from somewhere else. Sometimes it is because the person doesn't really understand how what you wrote differs, sometimes because they think that a basic idea is all it takes to write something and that execution of the concept is mere detail, and sometimes because they simply don't understand that several people can have the same idea and it can be original for all of them. I had an agent reject a book once because she said the three main characters were obviously derived from characters on a semi-popular TV show, but I had never seen those characters on that TV show or even heard of them. More gratifying was when I expressed an idea to a professor and he replied "What did Freud call that?" and I was thinking "Freud had that idea? Cool! I might do okay in this class after all." I hadn't consciously known that was something that Freud had written on, but I had probably picked up on the concept subconsciously at some point or another and just incorporated it into my getstalt of knowledge. We are all genetically connected and similarly educated and all live in pretty much the same real world and popular culture, so a little resonance on an idea is to be expected.

So just go out there and write long and prosper!

I just finished reading your book, and wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed it. I immediately fell in love with Story and Eirnin and, perhaps most of all, Adair (who is easily made of huge amounts of WIN) and physically could not keep myself from reading once I'd started. I believe it took me... 2 full days to read? I had intended to save it for reading on my flight to London this coming week, but I couldn't wait and once I'd started there was simply no way I could keep from continuing.

All that to say, I adored it and cannot wait for the second book to come out. Seriously, I am in pain for the waiting. So quickly! Indulge us with another! I think I speak for all of your readers when I say that we desperately want to know What Happens Next!

I didn't know where to put this, but I've noticed that some books are coming out with... for lack of a better term, music videos. Or theme songs. Take "The Survivors: Book One by Amanda Havard. This is the only one I can put an exact name to, but I've seen others floating around youtube.I think it might be a good marketing idea, at least in my view, if you can get an artist who has a following. The song in that video was done by Chris Mann, who I rant and rave about because he is awesome. Here's a link to the video in question:

Just a thought I had in my head, to get your book out there to more people. :D
